The Southwest Florida Research and Education Center Graduate Student Organization (SWFRECGSO) would like to invite graduate students and faculty members to join us for the 6th Annual South Florida Graduate Research Symposium on Friday, June 22, at the Southwest Florida Research and Education Center (SWFREC) in Immokalee. Dr. Elaine Turner, Dean, UF/IFAS CALS, will be our special guest at this event. There will also be an optional field tour of the Silver Lake Preserve at Lykes Ranch for the first 30 attendees. The deadline for abstract submission is May 7. During the past five years, nearly 130 students and 250-plus attendees have participated in the Symposium, which has been hosted at SWFREC for the last two years. This poster-only symposium is an excellent opportunity for students to showcase their research, gain experience in poster preparation and presentation, and network with faculty members as well as students housed at universities and research centers across South Florida.

 

The full agenda for the 2018 Symposium includes an optional field trip and is as follows:

 

9:00 – 9:30               Poster setup and reception (coffee, soft drinks, baked goods) 

9:30 – 9:45               Welcome

2:15 – 2:30               Best poster awards and concluding remarks 

3:00 – 5:00               Optional: Ecological tour of Silver Lake Preserve at Lykes Ranch 

 

Participation from graduate and undergraduate students in all disciplines is encouraged and all are welcome.  Previous presenters have included students majoring in agricultural and biological engineering, biology, entomology, environmental science, forestry, horticulture, soil and water science, and wildlife ecology.  In addition to students having the opportunity to hone their presentation skills, presenters of the three best graduate and undergraduate posters will be recognized and receive CASH PRIZES ($300, $200, $100 for graduates) and certificates. Only full-time enrolled University of Florida students will be eligible for cash prizes.

 

The deadline for submission of poster titles and abstracts is Monday, May 7, 2018, to allow time for preparation of the program, which will include publication of abstracts. Students should register for the Symposium and submit their abstracts by May 7, 2018, using this link: Sixth Annual South Florida Graduate Research Symposium Registration. Registrants may also schedule an ecological tour of the Silver Lake Preserve at Lykes Ranch for the first 30 students. There is limited space, so please submit early!
