We use a similar approach to what William Hardaway described. William would you be willing to share the rubric you referenced?

We too find that content scenarios that emphasize the process as opposed to solving/finding the answer gives us a better sense of who will fit into a tutoring position. We don't want to reinforce that they have to be an encyclopedic reference and know all answers at any moment. Instead we want to see if they can model how to involve the student through redirection/questioning and use appropriate resources in the moment to work through the material as this is what we want students to get from tutoring.

We also require a faculty recommendation as well but are considering working with faculty to develop content quizzes for specific courses in the future. I just came from CRLA and one campus was using content quizzes only after the learning center staff had interviewed the student and determined they were a good fit for the position. The quiz was the final step to the selection process and as long as the student passed with the established pass rate they were offered the position.

I think for us, the goal would be to have the content quiz be one aspect of the selection criteria, not the main criteria itself as the soft skills are especially important for good tutoring practices, not the content alone.
