We use Canvas a lot and I love it. You can create modules to organize everything by topic/need and the pages can link to pretty much anything (scheduling systems, etc.). I would see Canvas as a very viable option for this type of use. It also gives you more direct communication with students because you can use the internal mailtool instead of expecting them to click on a link that takes them to another mail platform to send a message. As long as you have someone who can thoughtfully map it out first (in terms of what goes to files, what is published/not, what pages are listed, and what your modules will be) and then you are consistent in sticking to that method of organization, it can work very well.

Hello Nadia- your institution is not the first to primarily use the website for marketing purposes with prospective students. See it as a blessing in disguise as many students will tell you they don't go to the website or it's too many clicks to find what they need. I did at a previous institution and will be moving forward to do so at my current institution use Canvas to have an Academic Support Center Primary page. That page was on the left dashboard so both students and faculty could view it from all courses. Within Canvas is great because it will give you an opportunity to set up modules of key information that can be very extensive(study strategies, writing support, time management, apps, etc.) What's key is that you want to strongly advocate to have on the left where it's prominent and a staple icon on your Canvas dashboard. Our Library also did the same and created a page with modules as well. It will also enable your department to put the steps of how to schedule!
appointments, students can email you directly from within Canvas, you could set up live sessions and chats using all the communication features from within Canvas, and you can access and make any necessary changes/revisions yourself. I have to look on my external drive and I'll send you a screenshot of what it looked like and the modules.

From within Canvas, it's set up as a "course" but the key piece is that it's not a semester to semester course with an end date. Your Canvas IT people can set up behind it so all current students and faculty can be added and they can set up behind the screen so that each semester students who graduate are purged from the course and all new students and faculty are added to the course.

Subject: Use of LMS (Canvas/Blackboard) to host Academic Support Services

Hello, Colleagues -

Right now, our institution's website is full of old, outdated or unnecessary information. The powers that be have decided to redesign the website and really parse it down so it primarily serves one audience - prospective students. In deciding where to house all the remaining information, two options have emerged: 1. migrating instructional content into our LMS (Canvas) or 2. migrating information to our intra-net (Sharepoint). Both options are behind a SSO (single sign on) and our students will have to log in to one system or another to access this information.

So, our marketing department has proposed "light" footprint for academic support services on the website (mainly just what we offer), and are asking us to consider where we need to "live" behind the SSO options provided. This is where our campus-specific information will go, including hours of operation, specific services, video content, etc.

This is where I need your help - are there any academic support departments out there that use Canvas or Sharepoint as their primary communication hub for their students? If so, would you be willing to share how you managed this or screengrabs of your sharepoint layouts or canvas organization?

Thanks, friends -

Nadia
