We just started using Zoom for online tutoring this semester. It hasn't really taken off yet, but the sessions that have been held online have been pretty successful so far! The platform is easy to use and pretty reliable. For math, it is a little hard to use the whiteboard feature and write with a mouse, so we have gotten a document cam for the tutors to use when they need to write something out (rather than type on the whiteboard.) We have also found that it doesn't work great with pads and other tablets on the student side, so we are requesting that they use a computer or laptop for the session.

Overall, I have no complaints! My staff has also reported that it is easier to use than they thought it would be.

What's up from Fresno State?

We currently use Zoom as our online learning platform. Tutors enjoy the ease of use the platform provides and most of their challenges can be addressed through equipment improvements and recruitment. I think it is one of the simplest platforms with a great U/X and we use it to tutor writing, anatomy physiology, chemistry, and math live. We also have more subjects to come.

Here is a video a group of our tutors made as a training project talking about the benefits and challenges of the platform https://drive.google.com/a/mail.fresnostate.edu/file/d/0B6rOYItio6ZYVklVZXRiLWxndUE/view?usp=sharing

Subject: Zoom Use for Online Tutoring

Hello,

Does anyone currently use Zoom for online or virtual tutoring?  We currently use Blackboard Ultra but I am being strongly encouraged to switch to Zoom.  If you are using, what are the pros and cons you have found with Zoom?

Thank you and enjoy your break!

Jill
