the Oceans
Douglas
Capone
is world
renown
for
his
work
on nitrogen
cycling
in the
marine
environment.
Dr.
Capone
holds
the
Wrigley
Chair
of
Environmental
Biology
and
is departmental
chair
of Biological
Sciences at
the
University
of Southern California,
Los Angeles,
California.
His
work
has revealed
how
nitrogen
fixation
may be
a major
determinant
of
the capacity
of
the
oligotrophic
tropical
oceans
to
take
up
atmospheric
carbon
dioxide.
Professor
Capone
has
also taken
a leadership role
in national
environmental
research
programs
and
has
made a
major
contribution
to
the
development
of human resources
in oceanography
and
environmental science.
He
is the
author
of more
than
100
articles
in scientific
journals,
including
Science
and
Nature,
some of
his awards
include:
Fellow,
American
Academy
of
Microbiology;
Fellow,
American
Association
for
the
Advancement
of Science; Fellow,
American
Geophysical Union;
Fellow
of the
American
Society
of
Limnology
and
Oceanography,
and
the
Antarctic Service
medal.
