Thanks so much, Emily, for recommending out book. I wanted to recommend it, but I didn't want to seem like I was "self-promoting". But since it has been suggested by you, I'd like to add a few more details. :)

I have been told that students really like it because it isn't preachy and doesn't suggest things that they should already know about. And it is very motivational because we put in tons of examples of real students who were failing but turned it around quickly and dramatically by using the strategies in the book. It's based on teaching students about metacognition and about how they can control their learning outcomes. The foreword was written by Mark McDaniel, author of Make it Stick.

There is a discount for volume, starting with as few as 5 copies. I've attached a flier with more info about the student book and the book we wrote for faculty, Teach Students How to Learn (which several schools use for tutor training). There's a code for a 20% off discount. Please feel free to email me off list if you have questions.

Have a great weekend!
Saundra

Hi Jenny,

I don't blame you for looking for something else! I'd looked at On Course and thought it was expensive and made everything more complicated than it needs to be.

I would recommend Saundra McGuire's Teach Yourself How to Learn. It's inexpensive, brief, and written in a pleasant, casual style. It's research based and spends a lot of time on things students haven't already heard (and ignored) a dozen times. It may not be as comprehensive as On Course, but I think students would get more out of it.

Hope this helps,
Emily

Hello All,

We run a one-credit study skills course for students on first-time probation (only for freshmen and sophomores). I am looking for a new text that might fit this. We previously used On Course but are looking for something different.

Thanks!
