Subject: Re: [SOCNET] Networks textbook***** To join INSNA, visit http://www.insna.org *****I am averse to self-promotion, and I genuinely believe the books mentioned in this thread will be more useful than what I have written, whether because more comprehensive, or more sophisticated, or more concretely practice-oriented. Still, my book Culture in Networks (Polity 2017; ISBN: 978-0745687162) was designed as a non-technical approach to integrating the study of culture and social networks, and might work well for an undergrad class on networks, or for a student interested in the digital humanities. I just put it out there as you gather ideas.

Zweig that I’m finding to be invaluable while writing my master’s thesis. The main themes are how, when, and why to use what network techniques, and which are best suited to what types of data. It places an emphasis on understanding the technical and mathematical decisions researchers should make, that can often be hidden behind ready-made programs with plug-and-play commands. For SNA, I like 'Analyzing Social Networks' by Borgatti, Everett, and Johnson. It does a nice job of giving a broad overview of the field and explaining concepts. There are multiple tie-in examples with UCINET, for which the corresponding code and datasets are included with the (free) online study resources.
For digital humanities try checking out 'Bit by Bit' by Salganik (https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__www.bitbybitbook.com_&d=DwIGaQ&c=sJ6xIWYx-zLMB3EPkvcnVg&r=yQQsvTNAnbvDXGM4nDrXAje4pr0qHX2qIOcCQtJ5k3w&m=Dq_oGRQHc1NyHLPZ5I6opd2PAxQeqHEtAH94AATAMqU&s=iqlK0aIG9rNPq5QKTald7ke1s9UdYqzTg48t-Yt3RE0&e=). That's listed as computational social science, not digital humanities, but you can check the full book out online to see if it meets your needs. I find it quite readable and easy to follow so it's hopefully good for young students as well.

Hello everyone,
I have a question: Which textbooks would you consider appropriate for
the following two courses?
* NETWORKS (Network Science, Social Network Analysis)
* DIGITAL HUMANITIES
Please notice that these are two separate one semester long
undergraduate courses intended for Liberal Arts and Humanities
students.
I would be obliged for any recommendations you might have the time to make.
Thanks!
