We do exactly the same. We have a Keurig and charge a $1 a cup. But, we keep the cups in the learning center--even though we are also in the library. We also give free K-cups during tutor appreciation week and finals week--along with snacks.

My staff drinks more of the coffee than students.

We have a free coffee bar in our Writing Center. It costs far less than you might think, in part because colleagues and outside entities far and wide will hear about what you are doing and offer to donate tea/coffee/filters after a while. We have brewed coffee and an electric teakettle for tea. One way we cut costs over time was to stop using paper and plastic; we use real mugs and silverware, so the initial cost is the only outlay in that area, and even then people donated mugs (and we thrifted some), so it feels more mismatched. eclectic, and homey.
It is well worth the effort to shift the tone just that tiny bit.
Good luck with your initiative!

Subject: [EXTERNAL] Coffee in your tutoring centers?~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ To access the LRNASST-L archives or User Guide, or to change your subscription options (including subscribe/unsubscribe), point your web browser to http://www.lists.ufl.edu/archives/lrnasst-l.html To contact the LRNASST-L owner, email [log in to unmask]Good morning everyone,
We took a poll asking what students want in our center. They suggested more whiteboards, a seating area, and better lighting. There were two items that made the majority of the responses:
- Coffee station
- More charging areas/stations for phones/laptops.
I think we can handle the other items, but I am not sure about how to make coffee happen with a limited budget. Does your facility have a coffee station and if so, how do you operate it? Is it brewed coffee or k-cup style? Do you charge for it or use the honor system?
Thanks for any help you can provide.
