As my last department grew and was encompassing different campuses and locations that weren’t supervised throughout everyone’s shifts, we started experimenting with a chat service. We went through a few different ones, and I can’t say that one stood out as better than the others, but what we did consistently was ensure that at any given time someone was signed on representing our reception/scheduling area, our computer lab for technical support, and an administrator.

Staff could choose to add to their accounts other tutors and staff members, but our Computer Lab team automatically added the areas I noted to each account when they configured it.

It made it easier for people in remote locations to clarify when they could expect someone if they were having issues logging into the scheduling system, ensure that updates to their schedule had been recorded or other technology based issues addressed, and I think most importantly it gave a sense of security to people in a slightly more remote location if anyone showed up acting in a way that made them uncomfortable.

It also simply let me and our other supervisors randomly check in and make sure that everyone was OK, holding the materials they needed, and frankly had arrived on time for their shift.

Sincerely,

This may be too lightweight for what you're wanting, but we use the Remind app to send mass notifications to our student workers and allow them to "text" each other.

Good Afternoon All and Happy Friday!

I'm currently brainstorming on how to best give tutors a more informal and faster way to communicate with myself, GAs, office staff, and each other instead of just email. As a professional unit, we use Slack but I'm not sure how the current college students perceive Slack. I am also aware of GroupMe but I worry about if that's too informal.

I would love to hear from you all about what platform you use and how it's worked.

Happy Friday!
