Hi Emily, this article may be of interest:

Vacca, R., Stacciarini, J.-M. R., & Tranmer, M. (2019). Cross-classified Multilevel Models for Personal Networks: Detecting and Accounting for Overlapping Actors. Sociological Methods & Research, 004912411988245. https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__doi.org_10.1177_0049124119882450&d=DwIFaQ&c=sJ6xIWYx-zLMB3EPkvcnVg&r=yQQsvTNAnbvDXGM4nDrXAje4pr0qHX2qIOcCQtJ5k3w&m=PdSGtz5p8SP5VZgzKLNLlWEYBwPG98x2M0fVxFRXGcI&s=7EGifzPrnRXhjSbikNUCmmA4VK9Oj6WZCx3EaQCou6I&e=

It describes a modeling approach that would account for overlapping alters (or egos) and would allow you to model ego-alter tie characteristics (e.g. type of relationship) as a function of ego attributes (or tie attributes or alter attributes).

Disclaimer: I'm quite comfortable with whole network analyses, but am new to ego-networks in general, so I'm not sure if the presence of common alters is actually relevant in our study. Conceptually, we are interested in the extent to which various ego attributes relate to the type of social relationships they report.
