National Graduate Student Crisis Line

The National Grad Crisis Line helps graduate students reach free, confidential telephone counseling, crisis intervention, suicide prevention, and information and referral services provided by specially-trained call-takers. Caring, professional staff and well-trained volunteers answer around the clock.

 

All counselors have completed training to understand the unique issues faced by graduate students. In addition to listening to and empathizing with a caller’s concerns, counselors assess the caller’s lethality risk, counsel, and offer various local support services and mental health resources for follow-up.

The Fulbright U.S. Student Program is the largest U.S. exchange program offering opportunities for students and young professionals to undertake international graduate study, advanced research, university teaching, and primary and secondary school teaching worldwide. The program currently awards approximately 2,000 grants annually to U.S. citizens in all fields of study, and operates in more than 140 countries worldwide. Language skills not necessarily required!

Technology Transfer Fellowship at NIAID

NIAID (National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases) is seeking qualified applicants for the Technology Transfer Fellowship Program in the Technology Transfer and Intellectual Property Office (TTIPO). The program enables individuals to complement their scientific and/or legal background with experience in technology transfer.

 

This program, which is administered by Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and NIAID. The initial appointment is for one year, but the appointment may be renewed up to a total of three years. The appointment is full time at NIAID in the Rockville, MD, area.

 

Candidates must have received a master's or doctoral degree in a relevant field within five years of the appointment start date and must be U.S. citizens.

2021-2022 Fulbright U.S. Scholar Competition

The Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program offers approximately 470 teachings, research or combination teaching/research awards in over 125 countries. Opportunities are available for college and university faculty and administrators as well as for professionals, artists, journalists, scientists, lawyers, independent scholars, and many others. In addition to several new program models designed to meet the changing needs of U.S. academics and professionals, Fulbright offers flexible awards including multi-country opportunities. Fulbright Programs last anywhere from 2 to 12 months.

American Institute of Indian Studies

The American Institute of Indian Studies (AIIS) invites applications from scholars from all disciplines who wish to conduct their research in India. Junior fellowships are given to doctoral candidates at universities in the U.S. to conduct research for their dissertations in India for up to eleven months. Senior long-term (six to nine months) and short-term (four months or less) fellowships are available for scholars who hold the Ph.D. degree. Scholarly/Professional development fellowships are available to scholars and professionals who have not previously worked in India. Creative and Performing Arts fellowships are available to practitioners of the arts of India. Eligible applicants include 1) U.S. citizens; and 2) citizens of other countries who are students or faculty members at U.S. colleges and universities (this rule does not apply to U.S. citizens).

Best Practices in Data Management

Learn practical strategies for best managing your research data. A number of U.S. funding agencies such as the National Science Foundation and the National Institutes of Health require researchers to supply plans for managing research data, called Data Management Plans (DMP), for all new grant proposals. This workshop will provide an overview of the questions to consider when creating a data management plan, with a focus on the DMPTool and tools for sharing your data at the University of Florida (e.g. subject-specific repositories). Topics include metadata and annotation, file formats and organization, storage, backups and security, and data sharing. The workshop is geared toward graduate students, faculty, and researchers.

Flipping Your Classroom with Team-Based Learning

Imagine a room full of students who studied BEFORE class and stay engaged the ENTIRE class and the exam is weeks away.  Many instructors think this is only possible in our dreams, but the use of team-based learning (TBL) can help make it a reality.  TBL is a process that allows students to develop skills in self-directed learning, holds them accountable to learning these concepts, and creates a safe learning environment to explore application of class content.  During the process, students also strengthen communication and teamwork skills.  This workshop will introduce you to the basic components of TBL and identify critical elements that keep students engaged.  The workshop will be interactive and will model the TBL process.  Prior to attending the workshop there is a 4-page summary of TBL to review. How Innovative Teaching Affects Those with Learning Differences

Innovative teaching strategies (e.g. flipped classroom, active/collaborative learning) are becoming more common in modern education. However, some of these activities are more compatible than others with students who have learning disabilities (LD) and/or attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). In this workshop, participants will learn how certain aspects of some innovative teaching strategies might positively or negatively affect the performance of students with LD/ADHD. There will also be an activity that will attempt to simulate the challenges that students with LD/ADHD face. I will also share my personal experience with what it was like as a student with ADHD in classrooms that practiced innovative teaching techniques and provide recommendations to improve these approaches.
