Fulbright Awareness Month 2020

The International Center is pleased to announce that Fulbright Awareness Month will be celebrated from March 10th to April 10th, 2020.  In collaboration with the UF Fulbright Lectures Committee, UF Honors, the Graduate School, College of Arts, UF IFAS, Dial Center for Written and Oral Communications, College of Journalism and Communications, College of Education, Levin College of Law, and the North Florida Fulbright Alumni Association, multiple informational sessions for students, scholars, faculty and staff will provide opportunities to learn about the Fulbright application process, and to hear about the experiences of past Fulbright scholars and students.

 

Additionally, this year’s information sessions for faculty and students interested in applying for the Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program will be led by Dr. Julie Taylor, Director of Academic Relations for the Fulbright Scholar Program at the Institute of International Education (IIE) in Washington, D.C.  Dr. Taylor will also be available for individual consultations with interested applicants To schedule an individual consultation, please contact Claire Anumba.

Help increase your competitive edge by joining us for our upcoming SBIR (Small Business Innovation Research)/STTR (Small Business Technology Transfer) workshop run by Jim Greenwood of Greenwood Consulting, hosted by the UF Collaboratory for Women Inventors. 2021-2022 Fulbright U.S. Scholar Competition

The Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program offers approximately 470 teachings, research or combination teaching/research awards in over 125 countries. Opportunities are available for college and university faculty and administrators as well as for professionals, artists, journalists, scientists, lawyers, independent scholars, and many others. In addition to several new program models designed to meet the changing needs of U.S. academics and professionals, Fulbright offers flexible awards including multi-country opportunities. Fulbright Programs last anywhere from 2 to 12 months.

Universidad Externado’s Summer University 2020 Teaching Experience

UEXT Summer University is an initiative where visiting lecturers from accredited institutions around the world, come to Bogota, Colombia to give interdisciplinary short-term courses addressed to international and national students in July. For 2020, the UExt Summer University will be focused on issues related to the challenges that the SDGs tackle to achieve global development.

Salix Gastrointestinal Health Scholars Program

The Salix Gastrointestinal Health Scholars Program, sponsored by Salix Pharmaceuticals, will award 10 recipients, including students pursuing graduate degrees, up to $10,000 each. The program is aimed at providing financial support to students who have not allowed a diagnosis of a GI disease to stand in the way of their academic achievements. Salix is proud to support this program that helps those impacted by a GI disease.

Graduate School Doctoral Dissertation Award

The University of Florida (UF) Graduate School Doctoral Dissertation Completion Award is a competitive, need based award program to provide final stage funding over an approximate period of 4-6 months for UF PhD candidates who have exhausted all other avenues of support and have received no funding for either a previous fall or spring term. This support will allow recipients the time and resources to focus exclusively on their dissertation through defense, final clearance, and graduation.

 

Successful applicants may receive funds over the course of Spring, Summer and Fall semesters. The application cycle for Summer C 2020, Summer C + Fall 2020, and Fall 2020 is open.

 

Amount of Awards:  up to $15,000 and up to 5 credit hours of in-state tuition and fees

 

Application Deadline:  Friday, March 13, 2020, at 5 p.m.

Delores Auzenne Dissertation Award

The Delores Auzenne Dissertation Award, named in honor of Delores Auzenne, was established to assist underrepresented doctoral students with little or no funding to complete their dissertations. The program provides funding to Ph.D. candidates in the advanced stages of their dissertations. Students on fellowships or assistantship are not eligible.

 

Successful applicants may receive funds over the course of Summer and the following Fall Semester or Spring Semester and the following Summer. The application cycle for Summer C 2020, Summer C & Fall 2020, or Fall 2020 Delores Auzenne Award is now open.

 

Number of Awards:  up to 4 Awards

Amount of Awards:  up to $15,000 and up to 5 credit hours of in-state tuition and fees

Graduate School Doctoral Research Travel Award

The Graduate School Doctoral Research Travel Award provides support for research related travel expenses for PhD students primarily in the humanities, arts, and social sciences. This program provides support for students with inadequate funding to conduct doctoral dissertation research away from UF. A student may apply for the award more than one time. However a student may receive the award only once.

 

The application cycle for Summer 2020 is now open.

We invite you to this year’s UF Social Justice Summit (SJS). The SJS summit will be co-sponsored by the College of Education and the Disability Resource Center. Given the work of the COE and DRC, the summit theme was selected to be: (Re)imagining Educational Spaces. The summit was designed with the intention of facilitating learning opportunities to better understand inequities in schools. We aim to discuss the experience of marginalized learners and imagine how we can collectively transform education. Educators, students, and learners across contexts are invited to attend.

Interface 2020 Better Together: Student Teams That Work

Do your students grumble and roll their eyes when they hear “group work”? Despite aversion to group work, collaborative learning techniques are highly effective for facilitating student learning. Diverse student groups help students tackle challenges and problems creatively while enhancing their comprehension. Continental breakfast will begin at 8:00 a.m., and lunch will be provided for all participants. The event will include the presentation of the 2020 Exemplary Online Awards and the 2020 Rising Star Awards. Faculty, staff, and graduate assistants are welcome.

How to Challenge Race and Gender Bias in Student Evaluations

Studies consistently show that student evaluations are biased against women faculty and faculty of color. Yet, higher education institutions continue to lean heavily on students’ evaluations of teaching for hiring and promotion decisions. This webinar is designed for faculty and administrators to better understand how student biases become transformed into institutional inequalities based on race and gender. The webinar provides administrators and faculty in leadership positions with a range of potential solutions for eliminating or minimizing the negative impacts of biased student evaluations. Recognizing that institutional change takes time, however, the webinar also provides strategies for empowering women faculty and faculty of color on how to advocate for themselves, particularly in situations where they are not being fully supported.

The Department of Psychiatry is pleased to invite you to join the “Mindful Relaxation Minutes”, a weekly thirty-minute opportunity to rejuvenate. We learn how to practice various proven ways to reduce stress levels, including Mindfulness, Yoga Nidra, Progressive Muscle Relaxation, Autogenic Training and Breath Work.

Workshops are no-commitment opportunities to learn and practice different coping skills and wellness habits aimed towards improving the mental health of students.

 

Prioritize your wellness by fitting one of our workshops into your weekly schedule. Everyone is welcome and no appointment or weekly commitment is required. Please make sure you show up on time, as space is limited and no one will be permitted to join that session once it begins.

 

All workshops run between 1/13 – 4/21.

The Disability Resource Center

The Disability Resource Center (DRC) celebrates disability identity as a valued aspect of diversity. The center champions a universally accessible community that supports the holistic advancement of individuals with disabilities. The DRC works with undergraduate and graduate students with disabilities related to mental health, medical health, learning disorders, and more.

The DRC offers accommodation services including reduced course loads, note-taking services, class attendance accommodations, assistive technology, accommodated testing, alternative format textbooks, and more. Students registered at the DRC may also take part in one-on-one academic and learning strategy coaching throughout a semester via phone, Skype, or face-to-face.
