We are also using Zoom with breakout rooms for drop-in tutoring. In addition to having a “Staff Kitchen” breakout room for staff, we have created a couple of chat channels in the Zoom desktop application. This allows us to chit-chat throughout the day, see each other’s online status, notify each other with @messaging if someone is needed urgently in a breakout room, and generally keep in touch and collaborate while working remotely.

Hi!

We are using Zoom. I think we like seeing each other. We can meet in the main room but more frequently we use the breakout rooms. I keep an “office” breakout room and we use it for the same types of conversations that we had before. We also keep a Tutor Cafe breakout room so that tutors may visit and collaborate when they are not tutoring.

I see positives in Discord, GoBoard, and Zoom and we will continue to weigh our choices. However, at the moment, I think we are leaning towards Zoom for ease of one address, familiarity with the classroom, and face-to-face (virtual) communication.

For asynchronous communication, we continue to use email.

There are a number of channels set up for different topics and I am constantly adding more. We have over 160 people on the LCP Discord server now, so it is a great place to ask questions and have conversations!

When we first left campus in March for Spring Break knowing that we would be resuming services remotely, some of my tutor staff created Discord servers to maintain contact with each other.  As the week went on, we decided that we would use it for tutoring as well.

Discord is free and is a robust platform that has allowed us to maintain a remote environment as close to our in-person tutoring as possible. On campus we have two locations- a Reading/Writing Lab and a Math-Science Lab.  We created a server for each.  We also made a server that functions as the coordinators' meeting space. Tutors have many options for providing assistance.  We use voice channels, text only, and screen share. Some tutors share a zoom link if the student prefers that.

Students can access the server on a "walk-in" basis (just like on campus) simply by logging in and asking for help.

One other great advantage of using Discord was our ability to message all the students at once using the @students tag.

We plan to continue using Discord as a remote tutoring option even after we return to our campus services.

Metropolitan Community College courses and student support services are being offered remotely. Although the five MCC campuses and Administrative Center are closed to the public for the time being, the College is open and operating. Hello, all!

I hope you are all having a happy Friday!

Do you use discord to maintain communication with your tutoring staff? How did you set it up? How does your student staff use it?

We are looking to put our tutoring services fully online next semester and wanted to explore ways of keeping lines of communication easy, open, and active. We've attempted to use other forms of communication before--GROUPME--and our tutors underutilized it.

Any feedback on this is much appreciated :)
