RE:

Temporary Emergency English Test Policy Adjustment Due to COVID-19

In light of possible continued testing difficulties here and abroad amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the Graduate School has made these temporary emergency English test policy adjustments for applicants seeking to start degree programs Fall 2020, Spring 2021, Summer A/B/C 2021, or Fall 2021 only:
1. For admission to a graduate degree program, we will accept alternative indicators of English language proficiency in lieu of IELTS and TOEFL scores if both tests are unavailable to the applicant. Alternatives could include:

* TOEFL ITP Plus for China scores (click for details: TOEFL ITP China<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__www.ets.org_s_cv_toefl_institutions_itp-2Dplus-2Dchina_&d=DwIFAg&c=sJ6xIWYx-zLMB3EPkvcnVg&r=HtfsZuOsGnFe2yZQk1P6WDtAZ93wBJyvUNyQ_Dv9jhk&m=4z9osSa2whyZMDZck0pPyqTodFlUcaWoHG6RxTC_gAo&s=fQDsdRefMuTUxdEgrxU5aOg3dpcbrPuYTXXQ3E75mlM&e= >)
* Pearson PTE Academic scores (click for details: PTE Academic<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__pearsonpte.com_the-2Dtest_who-2Daccepts-2Dit_&d=DwIFAg&c=sJ6xIWYx-zLMB3EPkvcnVg&r=HtfsZuOsGnFe2yZQk1P6WDtAZ93wBJyvUNyQ_Dv9jhk&m=4z9osSa2whyZMDZck0pPyqTodFlUcaWoHG6RxTC_gAo&s=PTQET_1uHpFhHCyiuOK0hT-zne11SvHrACWkhjPsWUA&e= >)
* Duolingo scores (click for details: Duolingo<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__englishtest.duolingo.com_scores&d=DwIFAg&c=sJ6xIWYx-zLMB3EPkvcnVg&r=HtfsZuOsGnFe2yZQk1P6WDtAZ93wBJyvUNyQ_Dv9jhk&m=4z9osSa2whyZMDZck0pPyqTodFlUcaWoHG6RxTC_gAo&s=TVojWqoPL8WfwApj-PlMgKg2jpDURclPxJiv8-Ev7zo&e= >)
* Documented departmental interviews (in person or via Skype/Zoom)
* Documentation of extensive experience with living and working in an English-language environment
* Any combination of these alternatives
However, due vigilance must be exercised in resorting to IELTS/TOEFL alternatives, since being able to communicate in an unfamiliar environment is a matter of student mental health and social well-being, not just academic performance. In resorting to IELTS/TOEFL alternatives, your program will remain responsible for coordinating remedial English if the admittee's academic performance shows need for it.
2. For appointment to a teaching assistantship (TA), current policy remains in force. Florida law requires teaching assistantship appointees to demonstrate -before they are assigned teaching duties - adequate English skills for teaching in the classroom, laboratory, or other instructional venue, be it in person or online. In the absence of acceptable TOEFL Speaking Portion scores, our on-campus SPEAK Test, offered through Academic Spoken English (ase.ufl.edu<https://ase.ufl.edu/>), will remain the means to meet that statutory requirement for employment as a teaching assistant with assigned instructional duties.
