I don't think there is a way to chat in the Zoom meeting between breakout sessions at the moment. Like Marti said, though, you can create a Zoom chat in the Client ("Home") application--this is the same app that you likely are joining meetings through.

  • In the image below, there's an example of our team's group chat, "Math Cafe Team." You can create a new group chat using the + sign circled below (if you hover over it, it is labeled "New Chat or Channel").

I am personally not a huge fan of this feature because you don't get a notification that you received a message in this chat (at least, I don't know if there's a setting to change this). The tab will flash at you when a new chat is posted, but that's all. I prefer using either Google Hangouts or Discord to chat with colleagues while we're in different Zoom rooms or breakout rooms.

We created a few channels: one has everyone, one for just the writing staff, one for specific people who worked on some tech issues. That way, people can participate and chats are saved regardless of the room being open or not. We do have a “kitchen” breakout room off of the main room that the staff hang in unless they move to a breakout room to work with a student, but we don’t chat there.

My colleagues and I are currently hosting a drop-in virtual Student Success Center via Pro account in Zoom, and I wondered if anyone has done something similar and figured out how to chat between breakout rooms using Zoom features.
