Hi there; we have used LASSI as well (it's a great tool!) and for a shorter (and free) version, we've used Academic Motivation Scale or Academic Intrinsic Motivation Scales - a copy of the first scale is available through a simple google search, and we pulled the second scale from Staley, C., & Staley, S. (2012). Building Dreams, Setting Goals. In Focus on College and Career Success (25-46). Boston, MA: Wadsworth.

Subject: Re: Assessing Motivation in Biology.

CAUTION: This email originates from outside RRC. Please verify the sender and always use caution with any requests, links or attached documents.

Here are some articles that I have written regarding the use of the LASSI as an assessment tool with first-year students--and a measure of motivation/emotional intelligence. It was used as part of the study strategy curriculum I developed for first-year students and students placed on probation; I also partnered with the nursing and physical therapy faculty to integrate assessment and curriculum into our first-year nursing and physical therapy course as a retention strategy and 6-year longitudinal study. Incoming students often struggled with taking Biology and Chem together their first year because they lacked many of the necessary strategies and skills. We found that the most essential skills for retention were emotional intelligence (indicated by Anxiety and Motivation). And of course, these were closely linked with low areas in other areas such as reading, time management, and study strategies.
The textbook used and integrated is 16 Weeks to College Success (Burkart/Kendall Hunt). The strategies in the textbook were directly linked to the test scores--and helped create advocacy with the students and the second LASSI assessments taken at the end of the semester showed positive improvements.

Good Afternoon,
I am working with the chair of Biology regarding two entry level biology of cells courses. Content is slightly different, both are mostly freshman, one is designed for those going into nursing and, the other course is for health science and biology majors. We are looking for a tool that could assess a student's motivation to be successful in the course. One course has a very high DFW and the other is very low.

The same instructor teaches both, (but not exclusively). I thought I'd ask if anyone has evaluated motivation and how you did it.

thanks.
