I have also used the three no-shows approach. Students who hit that point must meet with an administrator to discuss why. Unless I feel they are simply callous about it, I will reinstate services following the meeting with the caveat that itís their last opportunity of the semester for appointments.

I would also leave them the walk-in option either way.

During the pandemic if there are no drop-in options it is more difficult. In particular, in a private university setting an argument can be made that the student is paying for access to these services and therefore cannot be holistically denied them.

If there are no walk-in options left at all or at least for a tutor for a particular area the student needs then I would probably have the student call whomever is responsible for monitoring staff during the shifts and see if the tutor is unoccupied and the student can then connect. Itís more work on your end, but it doesnít cut off the student entirely from the service.

Our policy is that if a student no-shows twice they are suspended from services. They can lift the suspension after meeting with a staff member to talk about what is going on. We do this in order to help get the student the resources that they need (sometimes it's referring them to counseling, academic skills services, etc). If after we meet and help the student find resources and make a plan to help them attend sessions, they no-show again they are suspended from tutoring for that course for the rest of the semester. They wouldn't be suspended from other services (academic skills, SI, or tutoring for another course). 

This method has helped us get students the resources they need, has helped keep our tutors from getting too frustrated by students not attending sessions and helps open up more session availability for students who might have had scheduling conflicts with other tutors.
