One of the most interesing statements in the CHE, March 31, p. A 23
"Ready or Not: California Aims to Reduce Need for Remedial Instruction at
4-year Colleges" relates to assessment. Although California State Uni-
versities regularly admit only the upper third of applicants based upon
assessment testing and high school grades, in 1993-1994,

"The proportion of students admitted without meeting
admission criteria crept up from 15 per cent to 18 during
those years. Nonetheless, says Charles W. Lindahl, associate
vice-chancellor for academic affairs at California State, 72
per cent of the freshmen needing remedial courses are "regular
     admits."

Perhaps this tells us something about our assessment practices --
those pertaining to admission or to assessment/placement testing or
both. Gene Kerstiens [log in to unmask]
