This is a four-year grant with annual funding through 1998. Program Description: The purpose of the Central California Educational Talent Search Program is to assist participants to continue and graduate from secondary school and to enroll in postsecondary educational programs. Each year, 150 new participants will be selected from designated target areas. High school participants from primarily rural areas will be selected based on income, first generation to attend college and having the academic potential to benefit from postsecondary education. Services will include academic planning, career counseling, financial aid orientation, pre-admission testing, and outreach assistance with postsecondary education. Duties & Responsibilities: The incumbent will provide advising and counseling services to students in target schools; assist in the preparation and implementation of efforts to inform Talent Search participants of student financial aid and postsecondary optiions available. Provide participant identifications, selection, intake and counseling services in target high schoolds; provide workshops, seminars; assist in the implementation of early outreach acitivities; participates in inservice training needed to ensure successful implementation of assigned duties as related to the accomplishment of stated program objectives; assist the Project Director in the preparation of reports, evaluations, proposals and other documents necessary for the continued funding and successful opperation of the program. Qualifications & Experience: Bachelor's degree in education, counseling, psychology, social work education, or related field or discipline. Minimum of two years of professional experience in working with minority, low income and other disadvantaged students preferred. Experience and/or training in student assessment, career development, academic advisement and guidance and educational planning. Preference will be given to candidates whose experience and/or background is similar to those of Talent Search eligible populations served. Knowledge & Abilities: Demonstrated ability to work effectively with students, parents, community and school personnel. Good written and oral communication skills. Bilingual in Spanish/English preferred. Ability to work flexible hours including some evenings and weekends. Salary: $2,500 per month (10 months).
