I feel like the cynic today -- so here goes------- most speed reading programs simply teach developmental students to make mistakes in a faster more efficient manner. Poor rate is a symptom of another problem(s) such as poor vocabulary, limited fluency with complicated sentence structures, lack of prior knowledge, etc. Deal with the problem area(s) and rate will naturally increase. The term speed reading is at best a carrot that seems more acceptable to students than basic reading or developmental reading. ********************************* Norman A.
