Assistant Professor -- Developmental English
Grade: E-6
Reports to: Director, ABE/Foundation Programs

Job Summary:
The successful candidate will effectively conduct developmental-level
English and writing classes using a combination of direct instruction,
cooperative learning and computer-based prescriptive, interactive
instruction.  This instructor will aggressively and effectively work
with students pursuing academic, business and vocational studies to help
these individuals strengthen and develop their fundamental reading,
writing, communication, and study skills.  This position also involves
assisting with student assessment, and providing academic advisement,
counseling and support.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Instruct developmental-level writing and reading courses.
  2. Instruct students both in a classroom setting and an
     individualized, computer-based, lab setting.
  3. Develop and revise instructional materials, course outlines, and
  4. Develop facility with the software teaching program, "PLATO".
  5. Participate in student assessments, academic advising, and
  6. Participate in tracking vocational students' related instruction
  7. Participate in cooperative development of the Foundation Program's
     clientele, objectives, marketing strategies, and materials.
  8. Keep appropriate files and records
  9. Actively contribute to the attainment of the goals and mission of
     the college.
 10. Perform additional duties as assigned.

  1. Bachelor's degree required, Master's degree preferred, either in
     English or writing or education.
  2. Broad background teaching English and/or writing preferably in a
     Developmental Studies, ABE, ESL, Alternative, or Special Education
  3. Training in the writing process and/or knowledge of the Alaska
     State Writing Consortium preferred.
  4. Knowledge and practical experience with computer-based instruction
  5. Inupiaq speaking preferred.
  6. Valid Alaska Driver's License and clean driving record.
  7. Complete and pass a pre-employment drug screen.
