The Learning Assistance Center is a program of the Counseling Center and we are faculty specialists. Faculty specialists here often do not have doctorates while instructional faculty must have doctorates. Although one may graduate from a doctoral program which espouses a research/practitioner integration, that is easier said than done. Of course, there are those who can function in both arenas equally well, but I don't think that is common. I would argue for remaining outside of academic affairs to ensure the diversity in approach/perspective. This means extra efforts at collaboration and bridging the gap. It's possible and worth the effort.
