A few weeks ago there were comments on the listserve disparaging the
education system in the U.S. and expounding the benefits of the European
system and I can't remember if the topic was high school or college. If
you remember this topic, there is an article of interest for you in the
Nov. 5th, 1999 Chronicle of Higher Ed. On page A62, the title of the
article is "United States  Replaces Great Britain As Singapore's
Higher-Education Model." the main quote from the article is
"American-style higher learning has become an absolutely crucial part of
our vision for education. The very future of our economy is based on this
realization." Even though is seems from the article their motivation is
money rather than philosophy, I thought you might find the article of
interest.
